Have you ever
felt that your smile is being ruined by excessive exposure of gum tissue or due
to short upper teeth?
Your solution may be this simple procedure we call “Gum
recontouring ”Gum recontouring is a cosmetic procedure which involves removal of
excess gum tissue and sculpting of a more aesthetic smile.
While it was earlier
done with needles and scalpels, the procedure has been simplified by multiple
folds after the intervention of “LASER” dentistry. Causes of a “GUMMY” smile:
Due to genetic reasons, Excessive gum tissue, Hyperactive lip muscles, Mal-aligned
bite, Abnormal tooth eruption, Abnormal jaw development Clinically short upper
teeth.
How recontouring
is done:
Since laser
technology is being used, there is no need for needle poke for anesthetizing
the operative site. Application of a topical anesthesia is usually sufficient
to numb the tissue.
The laser vaporizes tissue instantly without producing any
burning sensation or pain to the patient. The laser tip not only removes the
excess gum tissue but also seals the remaining tissue preventing bleeding or
infection in the operative site.
Why it should be done ?
Optimally, a person’s
smile should display the gums as minimally as possible. And the gum tissue
visible as such has to have even contours. When there is excessive display of
gums or uneven contours, it steals the confidence of the individual to smile
and makes them reluctant to smile normally.
They try to control their smile or
smile, covering their mouth with their hand. Also, when gummy smile is due to
abnormal tooth eruption or abnormal jaw development, the patient may also have
an uncomfortable or improper bite and therefore the long term dental health may
become compromised.
Some of the treatment options available for the correction
of a “gummy smile” are: Surgical gum recontouring, Surgical lipre positioning,
Orthodontic braces in order to bring teeth to more appropriate position,
Maxillo-facial surgery to re-position the bone LASER recontouring.
Although the
choice of treatment varies according to the specific clinical scenario that
each patient presents with, LASER assisted gum recontouring is considered as a
promising choice in most cases since it is the most comfortable, least invasive
and painless procedure.
Some of the greatest advantages of Laser treatment is
that the area requires only topical application of anesthetic gel (No Needle Poke),
area treated undergoes concomittant sterilization, it is often bloodless, the
tissue gets bio-stimulation and healing is fast and uneventful.
