A business executive was deep in debt. Banks were demanding repayment. He
sat on the park bench, head in hands, wondering if anything could save him.
Suddenly an old man appeared before him. He said “Can I help”.
After listening to the executive’s story, the old man said, “I can help
you”.
He wrote out a check for Rs.500/- and disappeared, saying he will meet
again after exactly a year. The executive found new confidence. He put the
uncashed check in his safe. Just knowing it was there gave him strength to work
out a way to save his business, he thought. With renewed optimism, he
negotiated better deals. He closed several big sales. Within a few months, he
was out of debt and making money once again. Exactly one year later, he
returned to the park with the uncashed check. At the agreed upon time, the old
man appeared. But just as the executive was about to hand back the check and share
his success story, a nurse came running up and grabbed the old man.
“I am so glad I caught him!” she said. I hope he hasn’t been bothering
you. He is always escaping from the hospital and telling people that he is a
rich man.
And she led the old man away by the arm. The astonished executive just
stood there, and stunned. All year long he had been wheeling and dealing,
buying and selling, convinced he head half a million rupees in his safe to back
him up.
Then he realized that it was not money, that turned his life arund. It
was his new found self confidence that gave him the power to achieve his goals.
